What are the caskets made of?
The caskets are made of strong durable, corrugated cardboard with a plywood base for stability and easy sliding. They are not honeycombed cardboard. They have been tested thoroughly and can withstand weights up to 120kgs. The cardboard caskets are made by professional custom cardboard manufacturers in New Zealand. The caskets come with rope handles, a set of screws and instructions.
Why have Plywood bases?
The12mm thick plywood base is in compliance with Crematorium’s standards. The natural nature of cardboard requires such a strong base. This makes the product stable and robust and it can be slid easily The plywood has already been attached to the underside of the casket in the manufacturing stage. Plywood has a unique place in New Zealand’s culture and is a sustainable choice as a wooden base. It has good working properties and is an effective, efficient timber.
How eco-friendly are they?
The process of making cardboard is relatively eco-friendly but compared to wooden veneered caskets, they require fewer resources to make and treat and are easier to burn. The ash emissions are much less than conventional caskets after comprehensive testing. Emissions from MDF caskets are 50% higher than that of a comparable cardboard casket.
How much do the caskets weigh?
The caskets each weigh 9 kgs.
Where can individuals purchase our Caskets?
Selected funeral directors have our Caskets. Please consult your local Funeral director if one of our caskets is available.
Please note: We do not sell directly to the public.
Can the caskets be personalised?
Absolutely. People who have a passion for a sport, team or a pastime that could be mentioned can opt to have their casket decorated if they so desire. It is a touching way to end life’s journey and be adorned with treasures, pictures, photos or a native flag that symbolise who the individual was. Please note that crematorium regulations specify that no foreign objects be put into the caskets.
What are the advantages of using a cardboard casket?
Our Caskets are simplistic in appearance, making them appealing for those who wish for a ‘greener’ and straightforward casket, and are a cost effective alternative to the expensive wooden veneered caskets on the market today. They can be used as liners in other caskets or for direct cremation and even for a funeral service. They are more environmentally sensitive and come flat-packed to allow for easy storage and lower freight charges.

What are the disadvantages of using MDF wooden traditional caskets?
MDF (Medium Density Fibreboard) is an artificial wood product made up of woodchip, fibres and other by-products. It is known to contain high levels of toxins, one being formaldehyde. This toxin has been linked to many cancers and could be one of the causes of asthma and eye, ear, nose and throat irritations. In 2008 there were 29,200 deaths and over 90% of those were cremated or buried in MDF caskets with other artificial or synthetic materials such as plastic handles and liners. The environmental impact of using these products is immense. A publication from the Ministry for the Environment in 2008 on eco-coffins outlines the benefits of using more eco-friendly alternatives and getting support from the funeral industry on sustainability. Research has shown that MDF coffins take twice as long to burn than cardboard coffins and the emissions of pollutants are double than that of a cardboard coffin akin to our caskets.
Can they be used for a funeral service as well as a direct cremation?
Yes they can. We specify that a plastic liner be used as well when conducting a service. This is for hygiene reasons and to maintain the appearance of the casket. We do say that our Cardboard Caskets are not designed to be lifted or carried due to the natural nature of cardboard.
Do you ship internationally?
Yes we can ship internationally, click HERE to contact us with your address so we can arrange a shipping cost to your location.
How many sizes do you have?
We have 2 casket sizes... one is a 13” casket and the other is a 14” casket... both will fit in most conventional timber caskets.
Please note: The timber casket manufacturers sizes do vary.
Are there any problems at Crematoriums using these caskets?
There shouldn’t be. Our research and testing proves that they don’t have huge ash production and with the plywood base, it allows a steady heat and is quicker than traditional caskets in some crematoriums. The natural material is friendlier to the environment than MDF caskets and the emissions are far less. With cremation rates climbing in main cities, it is important that people are able to choose how they wish to exit this life and not have an impact on the environment, and at a more cost effective rate.
